In December 2021 William joined the Strings Club, an award-winning company providing holiday daycare camps for primary school children, as well as after-school clubs. As a Ukulele Course Leader, William is responsible for delivering ukulele tuition in Birmingham at the Harborne Holiday Camps as well as at afterschool ukulele clubs at Hallfield School and PPA cover at St Mary's School, Harborne.
William's vast knowledge of primary school songs and beginner ukulele repertoire have been well received and much appreciated by students and staff alike, and is frequently consulted for advice regarding group music teaching. For more information about Strings Club, please visit their website.
William works as cello section tutor for Birmingham Schools' Symphony Orchestra, and has previously coached cellos for South Birmingham Sinfonia. He has played with several ensembles in Birmingham such as the Central England Ensemble and the Mercian String Quartet.
He studied with Jean Gubbins and David Smith, and was a member of the Farqhuar Cello Quartet which won at the National Chamber Music Competition for Schools in 2003. In the following year he led a Cello Trio and has since played in pit orchestras for musicals and operas, including Opera 74's production of Verdi's "La Traviata" in 2009. His most notable solo performance was Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" with the Sutton Coldfield Orchestra in 2004.
Although he does not play the cello frequently as a soloist anymore, he plays in and manages the Cello Fellows - group of cellists from around the Birmingham area. Since summer 2015 they have begun performing around the Midlands in concerts and school workshops, including bespoke concerts for Uffculme School, with the music arranged by William. In September 2024 William performed with the Midland Chamber Orchestra's cello section in their promotional concerts.
William often arranges and transcibes music for clients who need notated sheet music of their work. Commissions include a wedding (string quartet & piano) and many songs for Music To You Ltd., a private music education company in Birmingham.
William's arrangements for cello quartet of popular music and themes from TV and film, have been very popular with audiences. These were commissioned for the Cello Fellows' performance at Uffculme School, and reused again later by the Midland Chamber Orchestra's cello section at Hallfield's Welcome Back Concert in 2024.
William completed the PGCert course "Sounds of Intent" in 2023, at Roehampton University. This was an introduction to the Sounds of Intent framework of musical development for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. This incorporates:
Developing and training students in terms of their academic and practical skills in music provision, using both fundamental theoretical and research issues.
Providing opportunities for the application of new knowledge within your own professional context; for example, developing and designing a music curriculum for children with learning difficulties.
Being introduced to a range of techniques required to promote the musical development of children with Special Educational Needs.
William's prior experience of working with SEN music groups, as well as his performance visits to Uffculme School, made him a suitably prepared student. Upon completing the course, William has taken on a large number of blind and visually impaired students at Services for Education, many of whom have additional needs.
From 2022-2023 a resource book, "Count Me In" was developed and trialled in several special needs schools across the UK. William was invited and delighted to be a part of this project, promoting it and giving constructive feedback regarding the book.
In addition, he has been chosen to attend and represent at conferences and seminars with Open Up Music, involving staff from National Open Orchestra, National Schools Symphony Orchestra, and many other high-profile ensembles in the UK.
